Insight-Based Mental Health Counselling & Wellbeing Consulting

with Emily Carrothers

Welcome -

Hello!  Welcome.  My name is Emily Carrothers, I am a registered social worker, a mom, a partner and a community member.  I have worked in mental health fields since 2008, including child and youth mental health agencies, adult mental health agencies, and post-secondary institutions.  I hold degrees at the Bachelor and Masters levels in Social Work, and I am completing my PhD at Western University.

I have taught social work courses and research courses at the Undergraduate and Graduate levels at King's University College, McMaster University, and Laurier University.  I have presented my work both nationally and internationally, including presentations at Oxford University, the University of Amsterdam, and the Regional Institute of Social Work, Paris.

I understand that coping can look like a lot of things when we are struggling.  Sometimes our best is incredible, and sometimes we feel ashamed of what our best might be.  We can be hard on ourselves, and we can carry around the narratives and feelings of others who have been hard on us over time.

I like to explore with clients what parts of themselves are showing up each day, how these parts might interact, and why some of these parts arrive when they do.  I like to help people to understand their situations and histories in new ways, and perhaps even understand themselves and their reactions in new ways, too.

I think that we are not the sum of our experiences, we are not entirely what others think that we are, and we often have parts of us that show up in our toughest moments that have messages for us, even parts of us that can arrive afraid, angry and anxious.

I specialize in working with individuals experiencing complex PTSD and trauma, as well as folks experiencing anxiety, grief and life transitions.  I have worked closely with individuals and couples experiencing terminal illness and individuals grappling with a sudden loss.  I practice using a trans-theoretical lens, and I lean on somatic processing techniques along with focussing on distress tolerance through trauma titration and renegotiation.

I find therapy fascinating, hopeful, and gentle.  I know that I am lucky to have the opportunity to work with new clients and help them on their journey to a place in their lives where they feel stable, capable, and worthy.
